Book Review: A Change of Fortune by Jen Turano

A Change of FortuneA Change of Fortune by Jen Turano tells the tale of an heiress who loses her fortune at the hands of an underhanded plot of one of her father's former employees.  Though once at the height of British society, Eliza is not the kind of fragile woman content to bemoan her losses until obscurity.  She concocts an almost silly plan of following her enemy across the ocean to chase him down in New York while attempting to pose as a governess.  She is neither good at acting nor is her plan very well organized.  She picks up a friend/accomplice as well as a love interest along the way.

As much as I wanted to like this book, there were several things that just didn't appeal.  First, the author interjects a sort of quirky humor into this story that makes this novel quite unlike any romance type book I have read.  The main character, though stunningly beautiful, is somewhat of a shallow person and seems to frequently get herself into embarrassing situations.  Secondly, the book is agonizingly slow until about 2/3 of the way through.  Then the plot gets rather entertaining but so much to the point that I found it not very believable.  Not to mention the love story aspect of this book is downright sappy.

The last critique I have is with the "christian" aspect of the book.  The main character's recently acquired friend, Agatha, is apparently supposed to be the spiritual influence, but she is herself not a  good example of Christian behavior.  The comments about God seem to be pretty trite and leave me wondering if they were added after the book had been written.  They just don't seem to flow with the story.

Again, though I found the book a bit odd, some may actually like this author's different style of writing, and may find it refreshing.  Especially if you enjoy Downton Abbey, this period may be particularly of interest.

3 out of 5 stars

I received a free copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for a fair and honest review.
